SHOW NOTES

Happy Hour with Alison McPherson

Alison McPherson won a recent giveaway to be featured on my blog, but she was destined to be on this podcast anyway! Now a real estate agent, Alison used to work in the wedding industry where she found herself job hopping after 1.5 years in every job. She worked for an event rental company, a caterer, two venues, destination management, and more. After she never really found true joy in any of her jobs and she got burnt out with the weddings and the nature of the wedding industry.

So what could she do that checked all of her boxes? She loved being a part of a person’s big day, loved the client interaction, and all of those things that are great about the wedding industry. As a real estate agent, Alison uses all of her wedding experience every day in really surprising ways!

I Don’t Care If I Make A Sale

“To my clients, I say: I am your teammate through this. And I don’t give a crap if you buy a house or not. I want you to make the right decision for you and your family. If the right decision is you renting and I don’t make a sale, that’s totally fine. I feel like that might be how I separate myself. I truly don’t care if I make sale. At the end of the day, my job is to help people. To make sure people are as educated as possible, so they make the best decision for them.”

What I’ve Loved About the Hampton Roads Creative Network

“I kept going to so many networking events in the wedding industry and joining networking groups for real estate agents, but I still felt like I wasn’t getting what I needed. I need people to be like, “Listen, Alison, that’s a great idea, but you need to shelf that.” Or, “That’s a great idea, run with it!” The thing I love about the Hampton Roads Creative Network so much is that we’re getting to know each other’s businesses inside and out. It’s a mastermind at the end of the day.

It’s been such a great thing to see people doing what they say they’re going to do and watching people execute everything we’ve talked about. it’s amazing to watch people’s businesses grow. A lot of the members are photographers or other creative entrepreneurs and sometimes I feel like a fraud, because I’m a real estate agent and real estate agents don’t often put their creativity out there like this. I’m just making my space.”

Takeaways

  • Having a group of people who will be honest with you about your business and your business goals is essential, whether that’s through the Hampton Roads Creative Network, friendships you’ve cultivated over the years, or other networking events.
  • Creativity can be an important element to any kind of business.
