Questions Answered in This Episode

  • How can you find that elusive work-life balance? (It’s not what you think!)

We’re Going About Work-Life Balance All Wrong

As women, we’re often searching for that elusive idea of work-life balance, especially as creative entrepreneurs. Our work life can so easily start to creep into our family life and it’s important to set those boundaries.

I love what Kari says about this idea of work-life balance. In fact, she comes right out and says she thinks there’s no such thing as work-life balance. Priorities can shift and change over time and it’s ok if work and life aren’t necessarily equal. “Everything ebbs and flows” she says and she tries to find a rhythm to feel most comfortable with her business and her home life. Sometimes finding that rhythm means saying no to jobs that we might really want to do if they don’t fit into the rhythm we’ve established.

Another tip that Kari recommends – put your important personal dates into your calendar first. We’ve talked about this a lot lately, but it’s important to plan your work around your life and prioritize the things that are important to you. If you put these dates into your calendar, it makes them a priority for you.

Be Uncomfortable!

Kari is getting ready to do a few projects that are hard for her – like public speaking! Opening up about what we’re uncomfortable with and what we’re anxious about can make us better entrepreneurs and better coaches. Kari makes the great point that people are often drawn to coaches who are just a few steps ahead of them to help show them the way to get there. Showing vulnerability helps make us more human to our clients, whether we’re coaches or photographers or makeup artists.

Invest in Your Business

When Kari started her coaching business, she already had entrepreneurial experience as a makeup artist. She realized pretty quickly as a makeup artist what a difference education could make. She knew jumping into a new business that investing in education would be key.

Key Takeaways

  • Schedule the things that are important to you on your calendar so that they are set in stone.
  • Investing in education and coaching is investing in yourself and your business.
  • Lean into the things that make you uncomfortable and push yourself.
