Comparing lenses, a quick experiment I didn’t know I did! | Elizabeth Henson Photos

Comparing lenses, a quick experiment I didn’t know I did!

So at my session last night I changed my lenses 3 times.    At the time I was just thinking about different things and different types of images I wanted to accomplish…. but I didn’t realize how fun this would be to compare when I got home!    I’ll do a quick review of my findings; just from the quick culling I did to find my sneak peeks.

I started off with my Nikon 105  2.8.    I love this lens for portraits!  The bokeh is just awesome and it is always super sharp.   The bokeh is really the only difference, it is a bit more creamy.   I purposely started with this one because as soon as I put the 24-70 on it usually doesn’t come off haha.   But I’m always happy with my results with this guy so I made sure to use it!

Next I put on my super Nikon 50mm 1.8.   Yes you read that right.  My cheapest, oldest lens.  I still love it!   And you have to see how sharp this thing is!!!   This was barely any editing, she is just that beautiful and this lens still rocks!   I do plan on upgrading to the 1.4 very soon, but honestly I don’t shoot wide open all that often so I have not had a dire need for the upgrade.    Sometimes I forget how much I love my 50mm.   I put this on because I knew we were heading to a darker part of the park and I wanted to let in more light.   It is also my lightest and most practical lens!

Finally I pulled out my 24-70.   When I was pregnant this lens never left my camera because I didn’t have to move as fast because it is not a prime lens like the other two.   It is my go-to for almost everything and I’m totally in love with the wide-angle shots it can get…. so I put this one to get a few of those before we were done.     (However, this shot is not wide, shot at 62mm….) but that was just my intention when putting on the lens.    This shot is probably not the best comparison to the other two because of the sun flare, but it is still fun to see.

So what did I learn reflecting on this?    Well lets just say that I was pleased that I was able to achieve my style and result with any of the lenses…..   I still got full body shots with the 50mm and the 105 that were still sharp.   Before I kinda always felt like I needed the 24-70 to get full body shots sharp (no idea why I convinced myself of that)…. but going through my images tonight everything was sharp!!!  I did not nail the lighting perfectly in all of them, but focus was on point.   So mac daddy lens, or cheap lens, I’m going to argue that if you know your camera you can rock what you got!

It is good to know if I only bring one lens to a session I can still get the results I want!
