What’s really in a detail shot……. why simple pictures mean so much more

What’s really in a detail shot…..

Detail Groom Shot

Most wedding galleries have an image like this….  the groom getting ready, usually buttoning his shirt, or putting on his tie.   Some people may not think much of it.    This image taken by our wedding photographer Amanda Hedgepeth hangs on the wall of my bedroom.   Slightly emotional, and super pregnant, I looked at it last night.   I wondered…. why do I love this image SO much??   I have always loved it.   But Mark’s face is not even in the picture?     I mean, it is a beautiful image (from the photog perspective), it looks like it could be in a magazine even…..   but why do I REALLY love it?    I asked myself this and I really looked at the picture hard for a few minutes.

These were my thoughts….

This was one of the last moments before he waited for me on the sandy beach that day to say “I do.”

I love the way the light is hitting his hands….  oh I love his hands.

A last moment where he does not wear a wedding ring… yes he actually picked me and wears his ring proudly every day.

That shirt that he changed his mind about a week before the wedding…..   thats my husband.

That undershirt that he probably still wears, slightly worn, no longer stark white.

The simple act of buttoning his shirt…  something I have seen him do a million times… but I never get tired of it.

A simple image from our wedding day that to so many people would seem almost meaningless, really means so much.   I know we don’t stop and think these things every day…. but it was nice to really ask myself WHY I love that picture so much.    I could have written a blog like this from the photographer perceptive and talk about details and why they are important….. but every bride will have attachments to different pictures for different reasons.   As photographers we capture every little thing we can for that reason, you never know which image will end up hanging on that couple’s wall…. which one they just might choose.   That is why these little details or ‘in-between’ moments are so important.
