Early this month Just Dandy Events and I hosted a very tiny invitational workshop.   Thanks to my pal Hylin we discovered the BEAUTIFUL Cedar Hall Farms in Virginia Beach.   It was cold, but we had an absolute blast.   So this tiny workshop was a six-hour event for local photographers wanting to take their game to the next level.   I purposely structured the event to be very small so we could really bond and dig into everyone’s businesses.   The biggest gripe I hear from newbies in the community and workshops is that styled shoots are always too crowded.   How do you really learn from the teacher and get great images when you are bumping elbows with 15 other photographers trying to get the same shot?  What about the introverts who might not be comfortable approaching the teacher when there is 10 people crowded around them already?    Talking with newbies brought me back to a styled shoot that I attended my first year that was SO crowded I gave up on the styled part and just took BTS pictures.   I’m sure some of you can relate.

There is no right or wrong way to host a workshop.   Some photographers love the big crowds and social events.   I honestly have fun at either!    This particular workshop was tailored for the needs of our little community and  I really loved the small and intimate setting.   It took a lot of stress off of Holly and I building the shoot, and I really feel like I walked away getting to know all of the attendees on a personal level.
