This might be a little heavy for a Friday Blog…. but I will try to keep it on the light side…. been wanting to blog this for a while. Those of you who may not know me, when I’m not being mom, wife, business owner, I’m also a high school art teacher.
Last year I taught a student…… but really he taught me.
He didn’t have enough to eat, or his Mother at home, there was a lot he didn’t have. But he did have this huge smile, a friendly and silly demeanor….. and he was one heck of an artist.
He taught me to look a little closer, and listen a little more.
Maybe it’s because I just had Gracie, so when I returned to work, I realized that all of my students are Someone’s Gracie.
Either way…. he filled my room with something different. He changed me as a teacher….. opened my heart… made me laugh, made me cry. He didn’t want material help, he wanted a job to do it himself.
Most people didn’t see his past, or his strength, they just his flaws….. but I saw someone who overcame all the odds. Who rode a bike too small for him to his new job everyday after school. Who had every reason to give up.
On the outside he was just my teacher’s pet…. but most of the time he was the teacher and I was the student. Teaching me life lessons about looking a little closer and listening a little more.
I’m so grateful for his sweet email yesterday but mostly grateful I met him.
